How X counts characters
X does not count characters one by one. It weighs them, so a post can be over the limit while text.length says it is under.
- Most letters, numbers and punctuation count as 1.
- Every link counts as 23, however long or short it is, because X rewrites links to its own shortener.
- Emoji count as 2, and so do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters.
- Styled “fonts” (bold or italic Unicode letters) count as 2 each, which is easy to miss.
Where the numbers come from
The counts use X's own open-source twitter-text rules rather than an approximation. Emoji added to Unicode after that library's last update may be weighed differently by X itself.
